wielding a large blade or hatchet isn't really a great idea. This is a great item to quickly ...
Very nifty -- using a 4lb mallet, I split pieces of wood about 4-5 inches across into thumb-size, and smaller kindling. At my fireplace, I used to baton slices off a piece of firewood with a thick Becker BK2 knife. But with kids and pets running around, wielding a large blade or hatchet isn't really a great idea. This is a great item to quickly make your kindling without chopping (you must smash though). Make sure to avoid wood with knots in it, and don't go too thick-- a piece of wood just smaller than the diameter of the safety ring can get stuck in the ring after it splits. It is a hoot to use though-- just messing around trying it out for a few minutes, I filled a whole Jet Sled with kindling. If you're not a big fan of using axes, you will like this.

Way better than expected!
This is a review for the Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter by Kindling Cracker.
I bought this as a humorous Christmas gift for my son. Once he took off the fancy bow, naturally we had to go play with it straight away. A half hour later and we're back inside with armloads of kindling. The splitter works perfectly and is even better than advertised. I've had fireplaces and wood stoves for my entire life, and figure I've seen every kind of splitter and maul by now. I had expected the Kindling Cracker to be good, but how could it be much of an improvement on what's already out there? Well, surprise, surprise - it's good and better. I couldn't be happier with this thing and here's why: I haven't been able to split kindling for a few years because of a bum shoulder, but today I discovered that with the Kindling Cracker I'm able to split SINGLE HANDED (with my trusty 4# Stanley sledge) all the kindling I'm in the mood for. I can even do it sitting down. This turned out to be a huge surprise gift for me because I never expected that I'd be able to split wood again. My son loves it, too, and the only downside is now we have to take turns.
Clean design, bullet-proof, super stable. The round top makes comfortable in the hand to carry.
Edit: I just bought an Estwing MRF3LB 3-Pound Sure Strike Fiberglass Drilling Hammer and it works even better than the Stanley for me.

Not Much More Effort Than Swinging the Mallet
I use a 4 lb. mallet and there's not much more effort than just swinging the mallet. It does the work. One tap to set it and then another tap or two and it's split. Do it again and again until the wood is the size you want. This is a very easy way to make kindling.

Works great I only wish I could get larger pieces of wood in there.

This is a sturdy piece. For some reason, I thought it would be easy to split kindling wood with this, however, it takes many whacks for the wood to split. Bought for elderly man and it takes everything he has to do one piece. Recommend for someone younger and/or strong.

easy. fun for hours
durable. easy. fun for hours. I love this thing. My kids take turns with the hammer to pound away. Unless you swing out of control, I can't see getting hurt doing this, regardless of age. we were able to make some pretty small diameter kindling pieces from quite a large piece of firewood. Best of all, the smaller pieces burn hotter with more visible flame and make for an overall better fire.

Like a Charm
We live in the Sierra and, in addition to our regular heating, we enjoy having fires during cold weather. I've learned not to order stuff for my husband Jim without checking with him first. I did, and he was skeptical but said he'd give it a try. It came the other day, he's used it a couple of times, and is pleased. Jim says it takes less force to split the wood and is definitely safer. 2 thumbs up!

It's great for what it's designed to do
Well, I still have 10 fingers after all the years of doing splitting on camping trips without this tool, but this will eliminate future close calls. It's great for what it's designed to do. Only negative is that it can only take wood that is already fairly small. For those that camp a lot and buy wood at camp grounds, this means the larger logs won't fit in it. You'll need to split those manually first, and then insert the remaining pieces in for splitting into kindling.

Swing as large a sledge hammer as you can and get ready to stack some kindling!!!

I really hope the little girl that invented this becomes a millionaire!!! What an incredible invention. My husband and I are older but have a 12 yr old son and this is great for all of us. It IS exactly as advertised. It's works and is a solid piece of equipment. My husband says we'd buy another one if we needed it.
