5 Stars By Nimbus on 2017-01-21 Great little computer after removing bloatware. I've had this computer for about a month. I use this laptop for my online class. I had to uninstall some bloatware and change some settings to get it to work faster, but it is a great little laptop. Don't expect to play an intensive games or edit movies with this laptop. It's good for doing work or school related things, browsing the Internet, and watching Netflix.
Pros: -Very small and lightweight. I can easily lift it with one hand. -Aesthetically pleasing design. I love the purple color and the finish. -Small design makes it very portable. Easy to fit into backpacks or briefcases. -Relatively fast computer, takes no time to startup/shutdown. -Good keyboard
Cons: -Speakers are pretty quiet and poor quality. Recommend using headphones for watching movies/listening to music. -Webcam is also subpar and pretty grainy. -Touchpad can be finicky, using a wireless mouse with it is really easy though. -32GB hard drive can support the operating system and not much else. That being said, a $20 64GB microSD will resolve this issue.
This computer was kind of slow when I first got it. Here's what I did to make it fast: 1. Remove ALL bloatware. Uninstall Apple Bonjour, LEAP, McAfee Antivirus, HP Support & Registration, browser extensions, etc. 2. Installed all updates for Windows Update (took almost an hour). Then, disabled automatic updates. Running Windows Update in the background will overload the processor. 3. Installed CCleaner and cleaned up cache/registry 4. Installed Google Chrome and used it instead of Edge/IE
Accessories I bought: -Logitech Wireless Mouse: Works great with this computer. The little wireless fob discreetly stays in the USB port. -Evecase works great for taking this computer and accessories on the go. -64GB microSD card to expand the storage space. I changed the settings so pretty much everything gets saved on there. Doesn't slow down the computer or saving at all.
Overall, this computer is ideal for school and work, emails, and browsing the internet. That being said, it's great at doing those things. I think it's an excellent value for the price!
4 Stars By B. Duffy on 2016-09-12 The keyboard is fantastic, and I have no issues writing for hours ... I bought this laptop after doing some extensive research. I wanted a laptop that I would use primarily for writing, both personally and at work. My only requirements were that it be extremely portable and cheaper than the average laptop. Maybe the difference between me and the negative reviewers is that I bought this laptop with a complete understanding that this should not be used as a primary PC, even though it is marketed as one.
It ships with quite a lot of bloatware, and I'm not computer savvy enough to get rid of all of it. I used information gleaned from other reviewers to remove a lot of what I don't need, and plan to ask someone at work to go through the rest. I inserted a 16 GB micro SD card from my old Android phone, and deleted everything on the card except for my old pictures. I still have more than enough room for both work and personal items. I use primarily Microsoft Word and Excel, so these programs don't typically take up much space. The only thing I store on the actual PC are the programs used to run it. If you don't plan to do the same thing, you're going to be upset about the storage. With how cheap thumb drives and micro SD cards are, I really don't see how my storage needs wouldn't be met.
The keyboard is fantastic, and I have no issues writing for hours on it. The screen could use a little work, but the computer cost two hundred dollars. I have no issues connecting to my home or work wifi. It handles internet browsing and videos very well, but I have to be cognizant of how many programs/internet tabs I have running at once or things start to run a little more slowly. This doesn't bother me.
If you're the type of person who is going to ask a lot of a machine, don't get this one. It's that simple. I would have liked to get a $1,000 laptop with a touch screen that turned into a tablet, but I didn't have the money. You're getting a lot for $200 here, and you won't be disappointed if you keep realistic expectations.
5 Stars By Lon J. Seidman on 2016-09-18 Much improved over last year's model - twice the RAM (now 4GB) for the same price The HP Stream is probably the best deal right now for a name brand $200 computer. Their 11 inch notebook now has 4 GB of RAM, up from 2GB in last year's model which does make a noticeable performance difference. The best part is the price is the same.
The added RAM allows for better multitasking and better overall performance for slightly more demanding tasks. The reason is that adding the extra 2GB of RAM added an additional memory channel which feeds data to the processor faster. This resulted in faster web browsing performance and even a boost in Minecraft performance.
But make no mistake: this is not a performance machine. It's good enough to run Windows and many basic apps adequately enough to get the job done but not much more than that.
It might be a great choice for kids as its limited internal storage and overall performance will not play modern games all that well (if at all) but does nicely run Microsoft Office applications. Battery life is pretty workable too when running lower end stuff, hovering around 6-8 hours.
The display runs on the colder side (more blue in hue) than I like but good enough for most tasks. The keyboard is very nice (my favorite out of many $200 PC's I've used), although the trackpad feels spongier than prior iterations.
In short this is a good deal for those looking for a cheap PC - especially now that it has double the RAM for the same price as last year's model.
ERRATA - I incorrectly stated that the processor used in this year's PC is the same as last year's. It is in fact an N3060 chip, slightly bumped in performance over last years but not significantly so. I stand by the assertion that the added channel of RAM makes a bigger performance difference on this machine.
4 Stars By Jim B. on 2016-12-31 Good when you delete this folder & add an SD card So far, the laptop is good except for the small amount of memory.
I JUST FOUND A WAY TO CLEAR UP SOME MEMORY! (I didn't have enough to do a Microsoft Service Pack update, but I was able to make room.)
So, here's the deal with this laptop. 1 - Get a SD Card & use that to install your programs too. I have using a 128GB card. It works well. And fast.
2 - Clear up some space. I uninstalled a few things, but the BIG deal is an extra windows 10 folder. You'll find it in the C drive. You'll see "Windows.old." You need the "Windows" folder, but the "Windows.old" folder is HUGE (Like 10 GB) and can be deleted. I googled "Windows.old" and found nothing but instructions on how to delete this. Anyway, after it was all said & done, I freed up 7 GB. I was so happy, I wanted to share what I found.
I shared a link to a page that helped me. [...]
5 Stars By Gresa Mustafa on 2016-11-22 College students best bet! I'm a college student, I didn't have a laptop prior to this purchase and only made a purchase because I have an online class this coming semester. I always just went to the school library and used word and printed my work and that was about the extent of my PC use. (Watched Netflix on my smart TV) I don't do any gaming or streaming the most of my use would be papers, blackboard use and shopping! this laptop came in two days with prime shipping, its affordable and the color is captivating. The display is beautiful and you can even download apps like instagram and Netflix. It comes with a years access of word but my school provides it for free anyway. Love this computer!
5 Stars By J Bat on 2017-03-09 Great little laptop for the price Great little laptop for the price! I had to review it because it was such a great surprise.
I have been a mac lover since film school in 2001. But all my macs have all gotten outdated or died after years of hard usage (video editing) I desperately need a new one but just can't come up with the money currently. I use my iphone for almost everything but was really struggling without a real keyboard or dealing with those annoying sites that require a desktop for whatever reason. I suffered staring at a tiny screen forever until I finally took a chance on this little purple guy figuring I would put it through its paces and return it if it wasn't working. For $200ish it seemed like an easy risk. So glad I spent the money.
I needed to do professional social media coverage for a big event and had to have something asap. It arrived in 2 days. Didn't have a lot of bloatware like most people warned. I only removed one or two programs I knew I would never use. It works perfectly for all social media platforms, internet research, word processing, MS excel, Skype, steaming from Netflix, downloading and uploading youtube videos, interfaced easily with 3 different printers, connects to my iPhone hot spot reliably and consistently.
Super easy and cheap to add storage with the SD card slot on side. Comes with free cloud storage which is a plus. YOU WILL NEED EXTRA STORAGE as the internal memory is too tiny for a lot of programs or files. The machine is very light and plastic. It has a nice grooved texture that keeps it from feeling flimsy or scratching easily. No fan but does not overheat even with hours of use! The screen is 14in diagonal measurement so that's roughly 7x12 inches large. Bright screen. Microphone and speakers work great with Skype and Spotify BUT UPDATE THE AUDIO FIRMWARE when it arrives. Out of the box there was no sound working. But one quick search linked me to HP's site and an update for the audio (Realtek) took only a few minutes and it has worked perfectly ever since.
NOT SUITABLE for medium to robust programs like Photoshop or even the design software for a Cameo Silhouette choked it up. I assume games are a no-go unless they are online. I used an online photo editor with no problems at all. Do not expect this computer to do more than it was designed to do and you will be very happy.
I wanted a nice sleeve for travel. They seen to come really only come in 13in and 15in online so I went with the 15in and it was much too big. Now that I measure it - the machine itself measures 13.25in at it's widest. So i suspect I could have gone with the 13in sleeves out there for a snug fit. The 14in screen size threw me off. Wish it came in a neutral color but that is probably why it is so cheap.
Other than having to update the audio firmware, the only annoying problems I have had are the exact same problems I have at the office with other far more expensive and capable PCs running Windows: programs stop responding sometimes, the screen freezes up. Nothing a restart can't fix. And I stress that these are the exact same problems I've dealt with on ANY Windows machine.
Which is why I'm typically a Mac user. :)
2 Stars By Patrick H. Clapham on 2016-11-17 nice little computer but Windows 10 will hog the hard drive This computer worked great for a couple of days, then I got a low memory warning. Going through the hard drive I found Windows 10 had taken up the whole memory via automatic updates. It feels like HP seriously dropped the ball with this system. They should have included a less memory intensive OS.
5 Stars By AlumiGogo Customer on 2017-01-08 Great Laptop for College I love this little laptop! Being in college, I needed a laptop that was easy to take to school and back home. This laptop is perfect for trips as such because it barely weighs a thing. I also needed something simple to be able to do my homework and research. This laptop is perfect for that too. I've had it for two months so far and it doesn't slow down on me since I'm only using it for those things. Occasionally, I do use it for streaming Netflix, Hulu, and my Ultra Violet collection on Flixster. Still, the computer doesn't slow down. I avoid installing larger programs on here, since I have another computer for that. Also, I added a micro sd card to the laptop where I can save all my homework and other files on it, that way it still runs smoothly. I highly recommend this for college students or anyone who is looking for something simple and light-weight. I would not recommend this for those that want or need to install larger programs to their computers or do online gaming. I hope this review helps.
4 Stars By Lynsey Dali on 2017-10-07 Decent Solid Little Machine! Purchased this for the nephew! I did not however receive the one I ordered from AlumiGogo, but I did get this somewhere else. I'm not necessarily here to get into all the details and specs, but I will say that this is a decent little machine (depending on your needs) for a Reasonable price. And aesthetically it is cute too, that doesn't hurt. I was originally looking at Chromebooks for my nephew, but I wasn't fond of all the restrictions and limitations of a Chromebook, so this was a good alternative. And trust me, I did all my research and homework, utilized all those tech sites and tech blogs, like I do any time before making a tech purchase, outweighed the pros and the cons, and this was a go, for what my nephew needed. Now... you're not going to get anything all that epic or intricate with this HP Stream laptop, it is in fact a "Budget Laptop", keep that in mind. Remember it Only has a (32 GB Hard Drive), (4 GB Ram) and a (1.6 GHz Processor), so I highly suggest removing as Much of the "Bloatware"/unnecessary apps as you can, to Free Up space on the Hard Drive, or at the very least doing some major disabling of the unnecessary apps that don't allow for removal (I truly Loathe that), but if you Can Uninstall it, Do It... because you also have to consider (Windows 10) takes up a large portion of the 32 GB Hard Drive space, and imagine when you get Windows updates. So to sum this up, this little guy is for someone who doesn't plan on doing anything all that intricate on their laptop, but instead plan on using it for the Basics such as... web surfing, homework, Microsoft Office, streaming music, streaming Netflix or your AlumiGogo Prime content, so on, editing photos and other basic things. If that is all you need your laptop for (like in the case of my nephew, particularly his homework), this should be perfect for you. It is a good solid little reliable quality machine... with its flaws and definitely not for all... but decent enough for the uses mentioned above.
1 Stars By AlumiGogo Customer on 2017-10-06 AN ABACUS WOULD BE A BETTER COMPUTER TO BUY!! BUYER BEWARE! Don't waste your money on this "Computer"!! Definitely save a few more bucks and buy something that works!!!!! Needless to say, it is on it's way back to AlumiGogo! I bought this piece of junk about two weeks ago. Not being very computer savvy, I did not realize that I was buying a unit that had ONLY 32 GIGS OF STORAGE.....29 GIGS WERE ALREADY USED UP WITH UNNESSECARY JUNK....LEAVING ONLY 2-3 GIGS OF USABLE STORAGE!!!! AND THAT WAS RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!!! It is so unbelievably slow by today's standard, that it is laughable! I called HP Tech, and they said that I could use a jump drive....Or delete the USELESS JUNK that they (HP) installed in it. Then they started blaming it on Windows 10, because it uses up too much of the 32 GIGS! Why in the world would HP produce something that is USELESS! There are jump drives that you can buy for under $100, and have the capacity of several hundreds of Gigs! I told them that I would have been better of sending me an abacus, or a pad of paper and a No.2 pencil, rather than what I received! It brought back memories of the first computer I had, a COMMADORE 64, which was a 8 BIT machine, that had a cassette tape for a hard drive! I may be Computer Ignorant.....But I AM NOT STUPID. If my observations are off base, Please let me know! My biggest question is, WHY would AlumiGogo sell something that is this terrible???
