5 Stars By Lon J. Seidman on 2013-09-29 A very good and affordable video capture device I am very impressed with this little box. I haven't heard of Honestech before but they've put together a very affordable and very easy to use capture device that will convert your old video tapes to a standard digital format.
Set up is simple: plug one end of the included composite cables to the outputs on the VCR and the other into the Vidbox. Then just connect the Vidbox to the Mac via the included USB cable, install the software, and you're off and running. There really isn't much to configure: the software will guide you through a step-by-step process and at the end will present a file that you can have transferred to iTunes, iMovie, or iDVD. The recorded file will also remain in a directory off your home directory so you can copy it off to an external hard drive or some other device.
My only gripe is that it may not offer enough flexibility for more advanced users. I couldn't find any options for changing the default storage directory nor could I adjust the brightness or contrast of the video signal prior to recording.
Those issues aside this is a simple and inexpensive way to preserve some of those old videotapes before it's too late.
5 Stars By David Bradshaw on 2013-10-11 Easy to Install and Easy to Use First off, I am using a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I put the included CD into the computer, however, if you have a Mac and it does not have a disk drive you can download the software and driver package from the manufacture's website (DMG). The install was easy, you run the Package file that installs the drivers and than you drag the actual Application to the Application folder. That was it, it was installed.
To copy video from any device (SVIDEO or Composite) you plug the little white box into the computer using Mini USB (cable included) and than plug in the video source to either composite (included) or SVIDEO (will need to use Composite for audio). The software is easy to use and is a simple interview like type where you just answer and follow each step. I do not see the point of the choose input type, since it seems that it will record the same no matter what. The white box is powered from the computer, so you will not need to plug it in, but you will have to plug into a powered hub or direct to computer.
The recording is easy, you can see a preview of what is being seen on the computer screen, you choose record and hit play or whatever on the device that you are recording. Once you are done you hit Stop and it saves the video file as a MOV file. Since it uses Composite the quality is only 480p (640x480), so this is not the best choice if you wish to copy movies to watch in full HD later. This is more for copying home movies or other items that do not need to be HD (although it would be easy to watch on a mobile device even at 480p). The audio is good and is in stereo. I recorded some test items and found that audio sync and video were both very good. There was no jumping or loss of frames that I could see. The audio matched well and I saw no delays or anything.
After it is exported as a MOV file you can easily edit it in iMovie or whatever program you use (the program included has no included program for editing). You can also burn to DVD using iDVD or whatever program you use. This software did not include any DVD burning. Newer Macs do not include iDVD (no longer part of iLife) so you may have to find a third party tool to burn, but I am sure you can find one online or in the App Store.
In the end this works great and is simple. It records whatever you have playing from external devices and allows you to watch a live preview of it. It would be nice if it had HDMI support and full HD copying, but using what it has does provide 480p and that works for most home movies and converting older content to digital. The easy to use tool makes this a great choice for copying older content to digital.
5 Stars By Bro tim on 2016-07-09 This thing works great. People may not understand this is just a capture device. Nothing more. This thing does what you want it to do. I really dont know what all the bad reviews are. It captures the analog signal and can capture the S video out also. Its not going to make your home movies 1080p. They end up on Mac at 720 which is nothing to sneeze at. I watch mine on plex and it works out great. If the VHS is older the quality will be lower even tho the rendering is 720p.
Its not rocket science and its not going to play magic with old VHS tapes. Its just a capture device. If youw ant a quality restoration then you will need someone to do the magic in Final cut for you. This will get from point a to point b and then your on your own after that.
I would spend way more for it and it has done 3 days now of videos with little pauses in between. Unless this thing breaks in a month then it will have served its purpose well. Will update if something changes.

4 Stars By Algory on 2016-01-14 Good bang for the buck This is a very good video capture device. It can be used with your cable box, a VCR and/or a DV camcorder for live action. But it has no editing functions so be prepared to use a third party editing app. It can't be used to capture directly to Adobe Premier Pro, Premier Elements, or any other video editing software that I am familiar with. Nor can it be used to capture to Quick Time. However, it is the only USB capture device that I have found that functions consistently with a Mac. The device is very easy to install both from disc or from software downloaded from the website. But the software interface is why I gave it only 4 stars. The video capture preview window is about 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 inches square and cannot be maximized to full screen, which is no problem if you're capturing pre-recorded video from a TV or VCR. But live capture from a camcorder can be difficult following live action. Still I think it is worth the $ just for its capture ability.
1 Stars By A. P. Thompson on 2014-04-15 Poor customer service = utter frustration I bought Honestech VIDBOX during a Gold Box deal, with the idea that I'd transfer my wife's Olympics equestrian VHS tapes to DVD for her enjoyment. But the VIDBOX's audio proved full of static and reverb, despite having hooked it up correctly. When I contacted customer service by e-mail, they were useless. They ended up advising me to repair permissions in Disk Utility and create a new admin account to test the box. I never got it working. I would urge everyone to avoid this product. If you have trouble with it, you are on your own.
5 Stars By Rebecca C. on 2017-09-05 AWESOME You will not regret this purchase. It took 5 minutes to set up. Super easy instructions, super easy UI/Set-up through the CD-Rom. Once installed, the CD is no longer needed to free up your USB port space on your Mac. You won't regret this purchase.
4 Stars By CriticalBuyer on 2017-03-28 This was very easy to set up This was very easy to set up. I have a computer with no CD drive and getting the download from the website was easy. My only complaint is that sometimes is stops working for no reason. Either the picture or the sound will just not work even though all cords are plugged in. If I wait awhile and try again, it will work.
4 Stars By Jim NJ on 2017-09-09 Did the Job The product worked reasonably well and allowed me to get the job done. A few issues with getting it restarted after the first use but did a reinstall and was ok. Takes a while to convert but that was not a surprise and I would expect all similar products to work the same.
5 Stars By S 'n' E on 2014-05-09 Easy to use I've only used it a couple times so far... but it is GREAT! My only complaint is it's Record and Stop. That's it. No pause. So if you have to do any editing within the piece you're recording, you'll need to record the whole thing and THEN access a simple (or complex as you'd like) video editing software. But even so... it is worth it to get these VHS tapes digitized before something happens to them.
