Don't Tie Them
I love the convenience of the Litter Genie. It makes digging through the treasure box a quick and painless chore.
You can minimize bag waste by clamping the bag with a couple of 4 inch zip ties. It's really the best way to empty the pail since the odors stay locked in and you're less likely to contaminate the outside of the bag. Make sure you cinch them on tight. They're rated for 19 lbs and I've never had one break open on me. I store the zip ties on the bottom of the genie pail so they're always where I can find them.
I've also read some complaints about smell. Just spray some Lysol around the rim and let the Lysol dry on the plastic. It should keep bacteria from breeding under the closed lid.

Solved a lot of problems.
Only 4 stars? I will explain that quickly and then tell you why it COULD be 5 stars. The attachment for the scooper makes it incredibly difficult to completely seal the top half of the genie itself. By simply not attaching it-I have no issues-so in that case I would give it 5 stars. Here is why:
I have two cats-both male, both dominate. And they OVER use the litter box. For a couple years, I was really lazy about cleaning out the litter box. It was such a hassle.Ad then I would start to smell it. Have to find plastic grocery bags, make sure there are no holes, use two just in case, etc. I HATED IT. So this genie (I'm assuming modeled off the diaper genie) solved ALL OF THAT.
I am not using the plastic scooper it came with, but a metal one I have just because I think it is more sturdy. After feeding the cats in the morning, I go to the litter box, scoop their junk into the genie, pull the lever out and it drops into the bag. No smell. No hassle. It sits right next to the litter box and there is no issue! With two male cats (one weighs about 14 lbs and the other about 20)- I have to replace the bag from the genie one every two weeks. And that is VERY easy to do!
It comes with one set of bags-and I have been using it for about two months and I still haven't gone through all the bags. It is a huge relief to me and I know the cats are happy with a clean potty everyday. I used to have problems with one of them going on the floor-and now I am convinced it was because I wasn't cleaning out the litter box enough.
It is a good product and I would highly recommend it.
I do hope in the future they make one that has more sturdy plastic-as I can see this one is only going to last so long. It does feel a bit flimsy. But I'm not traveling around with it-so I should be good for a while. But I would like made out of metal or some material that is better than it is now.
I do have to say that I can stick my nose right up to it-and I smell NOTHING when the bag is completely full.

This thing is amazing! Having to take little our three or four times a day was making me question how my two cats can still be so cute. With this thing twice a month. It retains the smell to where it doesn't even seem like o have cats in the house anymore. The feature of having a bag cutter inside so it's easy to keep the cartridge going is wonderful! I attached a photo to show max capacity. And remember

An absolute must for cats!!
Still an outstanding product that does what it says. We have multiple cats and the litter cleaning used to be a real chore. With the Litter Genie it's just scoop, pop it in the Genie and pull the slide and no more odors. The non-branded refills do fit and although some say they are not as good as the originals, I find all of them work just the same. Of course, the caveat here is to change the bags when they are about 1/2 full as nothing ever made will stand the test of time against cat urine, no matter how well it clumps. I change the bag at least once a week, sometimes twice. I do find that litter box smell is dependent on the type of food they eat; ours eat both wet and dry food so sometimes it can be quite odoriferous. If there is a down side it is that the waste contaminates the bag on the way to the bottom so the upper part will always have some odor, especially if you cut the bags short when disposing.
There is a cure for that in this little trick I devised. Place a Stick-Up deodorizer on the underside of the lid and when you lift the lid it's a pleasant citrus aroma. I buy the Stick-Ups and remove the sticky tape completely and place a strip of Velcro on the underside of the lid and another mating piece on the Stick-Up. Press it together and viola! You now have an even better Litter Genie. Plus, the top of the Stick-Up containing the scent gel can be pulled off the bottom so one application of Velcro is all that will be needed. Simply pull off the top section and replace it with the top section of the new Stick-Up and you're good to go again.
That said we use a natural cat litter, so your mileage on bags may vary depending on the number of cats, their waste and type of litter.
Here is another trick to assure your Litter Genie is always fresh smelling:

So much better than having a dirty trash can full of cat sh** sitting around!
I am stupid excited over this thing! lol. As the name implies, it's like a Diaper Genie, but for soiled cat litter! No more having to constantly walk to the community dumpster every time I scoop the litter box, because the choice was either that, or tie it up in a smaller trash bag and throw it in the kitchen trash can and have to smell it until the can was full enough to take out. It's just so much more convenient.
I haven't personally had any problems with odor control using this, but if you do, a little sprinkle of baking soda in the bottom of the bag should take care of that.
Initially I thought I wouldn't use the scoop that came with it because I expected it to be flimsy and honestly I really liked the scoop I already had, but the one that comes with it is actually really sturdy, easy to use, and is made to fit the opening of the can so no spills. I'm thinking now that I've used it, I will probably continue to use it after all.
So all in all a great product and well worth the money. I highly recommend it. This thing has made cleaning out the litter box so much less aggravating for me. It also looks nice. Not like having a dirty trash can full of cat sh** sitting around.

Genie and a new scoop for all my needs!
In order to get out of the using plastic grocery bags for scooped poo, I decided to try this. Here are my observations:
The grey & black is actually a dark grey and shiny black and is attractive looking.
It comes with it's own scoop. A little holder sits in slots located inside the rim of the genie. The scoop that comes with it is only slightly better than the dollar store brands. It's plastic with a hollow plastic handle. It sits perfectly inside the holder.
It comes with one pack of "trash bags" and the directions are fairly simple on how to place inside the unit. You tie a knot in the bottom of the bag, then fill it up with the scooped poo. After the bag is full, you will cut the bag (cutter inside) and tie it off and dispose of it. You then tie a new bag and start over.
The size is small compared to my litterbox-see pics. Great for small areas.
I just had another scooper break and though this one came with it's own, I wanted something with some heft that wouldn't bend or break. So I purchased: Sifter with Deep Shovel - Designed by Cat Owners - Teflon Coated and Solid Aluminum. "Perfect Scooper" with Free Holder. Solid Core Handle. iPrimio Patent Pending. BLACK https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BFOHQEC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 from AlumiGogo based on another review.
That scooper will probably last forever. It's very sturdy, has a solid handle, is slightly longer, and the scoop part is coated with teflon so that things do not stick. My cat has some heavy, hefty pee clumps and this will do the trick. It came with a wall holder, but it fits inside the genie scoop holder (it is taller than the scoop that comes with it and you can see the handle over the top. The scoop part is also slightly wider, but I don't see that being an issue. (See pic)

Good, but I preferred the Litter Locker 2
I have tried both this product and the Litter Locker 2. Although this one is nice and did work as advertised, I preferred the litter locker for a number of reasons. For starters, although both seem to contain smell fairly well, the litter genie is much smaller than the locker, and therefore fills up quicker and needs emptied out more often. Another reason is that the entire top comes off of the litter locker, whereas with the genie, the top part flips up. This makes cleaning that part much more difficult as you can not remove it from the rest of the case. Since this is where you dump the dirty litter, it tends to get fairly messy and I like the ability to remove and fully sanitize this portion, making the locker a better design. One final reason, and probably the most important to me, is that the litter locker makes it much easier to use garbage bags instead of the refills sold in store. I like to use the 8 gallon trash bags instead of buying the expensive refills. With the litter locker, I can simply place the garbage bag in and put the lid on, which holds it securely in place. The genie, however, since it folds down, makes it much more difficult to use trash bags with. You have to keep an empty refill and wrap the trash bag around that, securing it in place with a rubber band. Although it can be done, it isn't nearly as easy or secure as the litter locker 2. Therefore, although it does do a good job of containing smells and does help with litter box scooping, if I had a choice between the two this would be my second choice.

I love it and my cat loves it!
This is an awesome product! I live in a small apartment and the smell of my cat's waste could get overwhelming. I couldn't take it out to the dump every time I cleaned the litter box, so it would just sit in my kitchen trash and stink up the whole apartment. So the litter genie was a lifesaver! It gets rid of the smell, is so easy to use, and it really does last 2 weeks for one cat (who poops a lot). I just got another cat, so I'm not sure how long one bag will last with two, but it's so easy to change the bag and everything, I'm not worried about it. Also, my cat loves to sit on top of it hahaha added bonus!

Is AlumiGogo selling factory seconds in order to make prices low?
First off, I have three Litter Genie systems, one that came from the big box store whose name contains an alliteration using the letter "B" and two that came from AlumiGogo, both from this particular listing. The Litter Genie in and of itself is such a convenient item that I don't know how I dealt with having four (now five, actually) cats without it. I have five cat boxes that I clean at least once daily, and the municipality that I live in has a rule stating that all pet waste that goes into the trash cans must be at least double bagged. This meant that I had to find creative ways to acquire those ubiquitous plastic bags, just so I could use them to clean the cat boxes and still be on the right side of the law. Enter the Litter Genie. It is a self-contained device that holds plastic bags to hold all of the...uh, debris that I remove from the cat boxes, with a scoop holstered onto the side of the unit. As it is, it does a great job containing any odoriferous emanations from the cat waste contained within, but I keep a Stick Up-type of air freshener inside all three of my units, just in case. I can honestly say that I've never experienced any unsavory odor leakage from them, and I'm able to go a whole week before I have to empty the unit. It's so easy! I just pull a little bit more of the plastic liner out before I cut it, to ensure that I can tie a tight knot with it. Once I tie the knot and remove the (usually quite huge, typically rather smelly, definitely gross!) bag of... stuff, I put it into one (or sometimes two, if it's extra-special huge that week) of those plastic grocery bags, tie it up, and get it out of my life as quickly as I can! The Litter Genie truly is self-contained, when it's time to tie off the bag, I don't have to go searching for a scissors to cut the lining, because there's a bag cutter built right in! Starting a new bag is easy, too, just tie a (TIGHT!!!) knot in the liner, and your next bag is ready to be filled up! The scoop that comes with it is not anything to get excited about, but it does the job, and it's always right there, attached securely to the side. There's even a handle built into the unit; it's not really obvious, but there's a cutout right in the back at the top, and that's what enabled me to use one Litter Genie with four litter boxes, I'd just carry it from room to room.
I'm not sure what made me decide that I needed two more Litter Genies, maybe I just saw the low(er) price and had to have them. When they arrived, they were kind of twisted in their packaging. I don't know how that could have happened, but I figured they would still work with no real problems. Looking back, I wish that I'd taken the time to return them. The fit and finish of these two units is nowhere close to as good as the unit that I bought from the Store With the Alliteration in its name. The hinge between the top and bottom seems like it's been twisted, and as a result, it's really difficult to make the top and bottom "seal" properly. The button in the front that is typically pressed to access the inside of the unit is always pressed in, because the top portion is always slightly off-center, I'm guessing due to the way they were twisted up when I received them. The fit and finish of both units is pretty bad, to the point where I'm wondering if they're factory seconds, and AlumiGogo was able to acquire them at a much lower cost. If only one was off-center like this, I'd see it as a one-off thing, but both of mine are like this. I can still use them, but I can't use the handle to pick them up; if I want to move one of them, I need to pick it up from the bottom. Also, since the top and bottom don't mesh together properly, the holster that holds the scoop doesn't want to stay attached. I've attached pictures, since my words are kind of failing me as far as describing the issue with these.
The Litter Genie itself, the one I bought at the big box store: Five stars.
These two Litter Genies: Two stars. They don't stay together properly and as a result, I don't find them as handy as the first one that I bought. Caveat emptor, I guess. If the price is rock-bottom dirt-cheap, there may be a reason.

Buy a Tupperware container instead
This is an ok product and the concept is cool. But it still gets stinky and the bags are outrageously expensive. I found that using a Tupperware container with a grocery store produce bag works much better. It takes up less space, no need to purchase expensive bags, and you can't even smell it. Plus, it is much easier to keep this container clean.
